Gateway to College Kickoff
Gateway to College kicked off on August 31, 2007 with our new student orientation!! The orientation was held on the Brockton campus for the 42 students enrolled in the program. The students are eager to begin full-time classes starting on September 4th along with the rest of the Massasoit student body. Gateway to College students will be placed into 2 learning communities and take courses in College Experience, Reading, Writing and Math. Courses will be taught by Massasoit Community College faculty and run from Monday through Friday, 2:00pm-5:00pm.
First Day…
On September 4th, Gateway to College students began their first day as Massasoit Community College students. Students arrived for their first class with enthusiasm and high hopes.
Summer 2007
Massasoit President Charles Wall, along with Basan Nembirkow, Superintendent of Brockton Public Schools and Brockton Mayor Jim Harrington, welcomes the Gateway to College Program to Massasoit Community College. Gateway to College serves at-risk youth, 16 to 21 years old, who have dropped out or are on the verge of dropping out of high school.
The program gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while earning college credits and achieving college success. Students simultaneously accumulate high school and college credits, earning their high school diploma while progressing toward an associate degree or certificate.
The program promotes student success and readiness for an adult learning environment by grouping students into learning communities for their first semester, offering intensive literacy development, maintaining rigorous academic standards, and providing individualized support. Students work with Resource Specialists on issues ranging from transportation and study habits to pathway selection and applying for scholarships. The wrap-around support of the Resource Specialist keeps students on the right track for success. Because the program is offered on a college campus, students feel that they are treated as adults, and respond well to the academic and behavior expectations of the college environment. Gateway to College courses are offered in the afternoon, thus providing much needed flexibility for working students or students with children.
