Carine Sauvignon
Director of Gateway to College

Carine Sauvignon is the Director of the Gateway to College program. Prior to joining Massasoit Community College, she was an Adult Probation Officer with Suffolk Superior Court in Boston for 5 years and a Program Coordinator with the Criminal Justice Training Institute in Ft. Pierce, FL for 3 years.

Carine has also held positions working with the at-risk youth population. She has worked as a Mentor with Matchpoint in Boston and as a Center Director for Youth Fair Chance in New Haven, CT where she managed and coordinated the day to day activities for youth and adults between the ages of 14-30.

Carine has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Boston University.

Student Resource Specialist


Christina Alves has been a part of the Massasoit community for the past 6 years and is currently the Student Resource Specialist for the Gateway to College program. She has held various positions on campus that range from Orientation Assistant in the Advisement and Counseling Center where she aided students in the orientation process including registering for courses and academic planning, to Paraprofessional Math Tutor in the Academic Resource Center where she served as an academic mentor.

Christina is also an alumna of Massasoit Community College. She graduated in 2003 with Highest Honors from the Liberal Arts Studies program. Upon graduating, she received the University Scholars Scholarship to attend the University of Massachusetts. Christina graduated Summa Cum Laude in December 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.

Staff Assistant


Cheryl is currently the Staff Assistant for the Gateway to College program. Prior to moving back to Massachusetts, Cheryl recently worked for the Pasco County School District in Florida as an Instructional Assistant at the elementary level. This position included substitute and co-teaching, classroom organization and course work preparation. In addition, Cheryl has several years’ experience working in various office environments such as fundraising, accounts receivable and exporting, as well as secretarial duties at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA.

Cheryl received an Associate’s Degree with Honors from North Shore Community College with a double major of Liberal Arts and Business, and has earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Art from Bridgewater State College.

Balbina Cardoso
Resource Specialist Coordinator


Balbina Cardoso is the Resource Specialist Coordinator of the Gateway to College program. Prior to joining Massasoit Community College, she worked as a Senior Caseworker with Self Help Inc and the Department of Social Services in Brockton for 4 years. She also worked as a Case Manager with the Brockton Rise Youth Opportunity Center in Brockton, MA for 5 years.

Balbina has several years’ experience working with the at-risk population. She has worked as an Outreach Worker for the YMCA and she was also a Parent Coordinator for the Capeverdian Association and UMASS Boston. Balbina is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Capeverdian Creole.

Balbina is also an alumna of Massasoit Community College. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Springfield College, School of Human Service in Boston, MA.
